  • The search for the optimal diet continues to be the "holy grail" for many of the health care professionals today, presenting a challenge for nutritionists and practitioners to provide sound advice to consumers. The Western-based Standard American Diet has rapidly devolved into a processed, refined, and less nutritious selection of foods. There has been much media attention in the past several years given to this diet, which mimics that of the Paleolithic or "hunter-gatherer" ancestors. The therapeutic effect of the Paleolithic diet has been tested in a scientific model as well. One of the most popular "healthy" diets in today's Western culture and arguably worldwide is a vegetarian diet. A vegan diet is the strictest form of vegetarianism where all animal products are excluded entirely. A newly emerging concept in the search for the "holy grail" is nutritional genomics, the study of how foods affect the genes.
