- On Sunday evening, July 22, 1934, John Dillinger, “Public Enemy Number One,”² went to the movies. His companions were Polly Hamilton and Anna Cumpănaş, who also called herself Anna Sage. Anna Sage was wearing a bright orange dress (she would become infamous, later, as “the lady red”).³ It was a hot day in Chicago; spending an hour in a movie theater would have been a nice way to cool off. Dillinger, Hamilton, and Sage picked the Biograph Theater on North Lincoln Avenue, in the Lincoln Park neighborhood. The Biograph was only a few blocks away from the site of the
