  • The year 1541 is widely considered to have been Strasbourg's peak in terms of a formulation of a coherent approach to music in relation to reform. This chapter discusses the development of this policy and the way in which it was expressed in the 1541 Gesangbuch , and explores the influence Strasbourg had on church music in other parts of Europe, including England and Geneva. St Augustine's views on music were highly influential for many of the Protestant reformers. Bucer would have been familiar with his writings, which had been in print in Strasbourg since 1466. Zwingli seems to have headed towards what Augustine considered 'the direction of over-severity' in his decision to ban liturgical music. Strasbourg's influence on the English Protestant movement began long before Bucer's arrival on English soil. Valerain Poullain, Marten Micron, Paul Fagius, and Peter Martyr were all present in Strasbourg during the 1540s and were subsequently involved in the English reforms.
