  • During the Frankish reign of King Clovis I, the Christians of Alsace led a pious and respectable life: All priests lived with their wives and children in the church. The origins of the Christian hymn can be found in the legend of St Ambrose who as Bishop of Milan introduced songs for his congregation to sing. Choral singing did have a role to play in Strasbourg’s churches before the Reformation. However, despite the lack of opportunity for congregational singing at the turn of the century, presses in the city were already publishing books of psalms, hymns, and other spiritual songs. Ideas of emotion were also crucial to the reformers’ thinking on music. For Bucer, song was to be used because it could help the Word of God penetrate the heart more deeply. Bucer’s most mature and complete comments on hymns and singing arrived in the form of the preface to the Strasbourg Gesangbuch of 1541.
