  • When Fisher began his tenure at Rothamsted in 1919, statistical methods were almost entirely concerned with problems in which large volumes of data were in hand. This chapter discusses the two methodological problems faced by experimentalists: confounding and random variability. By 1923, Fisher had come to realize that both of these could be solved by a kind of statistical aikido. Fisher's idea of artificial randomization would become the cornerstone of modern experimental design, but was revolutionary in the 1920s. Neyman and Pearson had succeeded in resolving the ambiguities of Fisher's more intuitive approach to testing and estimation. Their solution was to recast the problem of statistical inference in operational terms, as a matter of making decisions. Furthermore, by focusing on behavior over the long run, their approach remained squarely within the objectivistic frequentist framework. This had the advantage, from their viewpoint, of taking subjective judgment out of the equation.
