  • This chapter focuses on the clayland regions of East Anglia, and then the lighter, acidic soils, which was a landscape that was undergoing a great deal of restructuring in eighteenth-century as a result of enclosure and agricultural improvement. Designed landscapes in the flatlands of East Anglia had many similarities with the hundreds of others that existed in lowland England. The distribution of designed landscapes across East Anglia, then, was closely linked to soil type, which in turn informed the character and appearance of the historic rural landscape and of landholding patterns and trends. High House Farm, in Kettlebaston in Suffolk, was shown on a map of 1722 with an avenue and a small area of woodland which may have functioned as an ornamental orchard or wilderness, all set within a complex pattern of field boundaries which were the result of piecemeal enclosure, small woods and thick hedgerows.
