- Blasphemy and its censorship have long been sources of conflict between religious groups, with a recent case on the world stage of an anti-Muslim depiction of Muhammad in a film directed by an American Coptic Christian and broadcast on the Internet in September 2012. This “disrespect for the prophet” sparked violent riots around the world. Such cases of religious blasphemy and its censorship are by no means new, since blasphemy is inherently a contested concept.
