By the start of the 1980s the women's movement had made a significant impact on American life. But women's changing status in society brought new conflicts between political factions, between women and men, and among women with competing interests. It also raised new questions about public policy. Could legislation ensure equality for women when structural inequality persisted? Chapter 12 explores divisions over the ERA, challenges of backlash against feminism, and workplace concerns such as pay equity, the glass ceiling, and the "mommy track." It looks at changes in family life; problems and achievements of black women; the impact of immigration since 1965; concerns of Hispanic and Asian women; and the gender gap in politics, which drew attention in national elections of the 1980s. A concluding section discusses feminist strategies for legal change.
