  • Rising expectations among young women spurred an outburst of feminism in the 1960s. The chapter starts with trends of the early post-World War II years: suburbanization, the baby boom, consumerism, and the prominence of domestic ideology. At the same time, women entered the labor force in unprecedented numbers. Young women of the 1950s received mixed signals about their roles in society; the birth control pill fostered new trends in sexual mores and courtship. Finally, the Civil Rights movement offered an effective mode of public protest. The founding of NOW in 1967 provided a focus for feminism; the new campaign for women's liberation and tactic of consciousness raising won national attention. Feminist campaigns of the 1960s, albeit two-pronged and divided, enjoyed wild success. They led to important changes in law, as well as to changes in education, the professions, behavior, and attitudes.
