Women played vital roles in England's North American colonies, both among settlers from Europe and in long-established Native American communities. The chapter explores the transatlantic world of early English colonists in New England and in the southern colonies: the subordinate place assigned to women in family, church, and community; the start of slavery; the role of indentured servants and enslaved women in colonial labor systems; the history and nature of Indian cultures; and the interactions of colonists with Native Americans. A section on the New England witchcraft trials of 1692, which concludes the chapter, refers back to earlier discussions of religion, household arrangements, and gender ideology.
