• When the Prussian army threatened to lay siege to Paris in 1870 during the Franco-Prussian War, the famous French art dealer Paul Durand-Ruel rapidly packed up his paintings and shipped them to London. Making his way to the British capital ‘just before the gates of Paris were shut,’ Durand-Ruel lost no time in setting up a new business across the Channel.
