• Facilitating collaborations between EU regions is crucial for enhancing knowledge diffusion in Europe, aligning with the objectives of the European Research Area (ERA) and the EU Cohesion Policy. This chapter analyses research collaboration networks to investigate the presence of knowledge cohesion in European regions. In doing so, it first builds on the link between collaboration, convergence, and cohesion and then makes a clear distinction between knowledge convergence and knowledge cohesion. To investigate knowledge cohesion, this chapter uses Stochastic Actor-Oriented Model (SAOM) applied as Simulation Investigation for Empirical Network Analysis (SIENA) in R. Knowledge cohesion is inferred by looking at network cohesion and changes in innovation capacity due to changes in the research network structure. The results show that while the research collaboration network shows cohesiveness, there is no evidence for knowledge cohesion.
