This chapter reconstructs Hegel's dynamic theory of property in his early Jena writings, focusing on the System of Ethical Life and the Philosophy of Spirit in particular. As opposed to deducing the right to property from principles of pure reason, Hegel gives a phenomenological account of property right emerging from material conflicts over possession and injury to one another. One of the main arguments of this chapter is that the various early drafts of the "struggle of life and death for recognition" signal different ways in which subjects can produce the normative self-awareness necessary to overcome limited and indeterminate modes of relating to themselves and others and in turn ground relations of right in general and property in particular.
