This chapter investigates various government sponsored health insurance schemes in detail. It covers both central and state sponsored health insurance schemes in greater detail. The per capita public expenditure on health in India is relatively very low. Notably, central government expenditure through grants and off budget activities seemed to be more equitable. Concerning the healthcare insurance particularly relating to India, a number of research studies have analysed schemes, both centrally sponsored, or state government funded.
