• The notion of frontier has a double entendre; it refers both to the vast outdoors beyond the tilled and tamed landscapes of the modern world, and to the colonial outback which made it possible, if not to evade the impinging global processes of colonialism, then to be left with enough space to be able to keep it at bay, until relatively recently. In this chapter we shall unpack the Arctic frontier as a zone of commerce and exchange on the margins. Both the new trading posts and the diseases that came with them, deeply affected the inhabitants of the region.
