- This book was conceived at the start of the new millennium, in the wake of Scottish devolution and the opening of the new Scottish parliament.¹ These events stimulated new interest and investment in Scotland’s past, and Scottish historians rose to the occasion, producing a series of new national histories – studies claiming to present a fresh, inclusive, recognisable and usable narrative of the past.² The election of a record number of women members to the first Scottish parliament in 1999 also excited comment; but this incursion of women into the Scottish political landscape was not paralleled by a similar recognition of
