• In the early part of the twentieth century there was a scattered array of people, schools, courses, and organizations devoted to the study and teaching of "public speaking," "expression," "oral English," "rhetoric," "oratory," and "elocution," in and around US colleges and universities. But as to anything resembling an academic discipline for such subjects, the landscape was, to exaggerate only slightly, "without form, and void."
