During the 18 years that Jacob Bernoulli occupied the Chair of Mathematics at Basel, his record of accomplishment elevated him to the first rank of European mathematicians. In addition to his extensive research on the infinitesimal calculus, these encomiums alluded to his unfinished masterpiece, Ars Conjectandi (The Art of Conjecturing). The Ars Conjectandi consists of four separate sections. The first section consists of a reprinting of Huygens's treatise in its entirety, along with extensive explanatory notes. The second section provides a thorough analysis of the ways in which various things can be arranged and combined. The third section provides a thorough analysis of the ways in which the theory of permutations and combinations can be applied to solve many problems related to various games of chance. The fourth section was entitled “The Use and Application of the Preceding Doctrine in Civil, Moral, and Economic Matters.”
