• To investigate all the areas related to computer music such as comprehending psychoacoustics, the physics of acoustic instruments and reverberation, and the mathematics of digital signal processing, composers had to digest graduate-level books, journals, and conference proceedings, each addressed to specialists in a particular discipline. The Computer Music Journal was born from the sharing of multidisciplinary research and ideas in the early artificial intelligence laboratories and computer science departments of Stanford University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Carnegie Mellon University, and other universities, as well as in research centers like Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique/Musique (IRCAM) and Bell Laboratories in the early to mid-1970s.
