3. La reproduction des inégalités sociales. 4. Le caractère cumulatif des inégalités. The study of the origins of inequalities in contemporary industrial societies has been transformed as a result of the recent publication of three works, by Raymond Boudon (L'inégalité des chances), Christopher Jencks (Inequality) and Roger Girod (Mobilité sociale), which challenge four generally accepted ideas: 1. the leading role played by cultural heritage in the origins of academic inequalities; 2. the important part played by the school in the origins of social inequalities; 3. the reproduction of social inequalities; 4. the cumulative nature of inequalities.
