  • Incidence of blister rust cankers, caused by Cronartium ribicola, was tallied in western white pine (Pinus monticola) provenance trials in British Columbia which included resistant stocks from the US resistance programs in Idaho and Dorena, Oregon. Resistant stocks from Idaho and Dorena were less rusted, so they are recommended for the Interior and Coast, respectively, over untested local stock. Also, inoculation trials of progeny from US selections, and Coastal and Interior candidates were assessed. Further selection within resistant US stock is possible, and will be necessary to maintain satisfactory stocking on sites with high inoculum. Coastal British Columbia seed orchards likely will have a higher level of resistance than Interior seed orchards, because in plantations there is already less rust in untested Coastal stock compared to untested Interior stock, and in inoculations the proportion of Coastal families with a low incidence of needle spotting is about 10x greater than that of Interior families.
