The LBL/SNLL EBIS has been operated as a leaky electron beam ion source (EBIS), i.e., with continuous gas leaks and continuous extraction of the ions. Under normal conditions the charge‐state distributions are determined by the extraction from the trap; recombination with the residual gas is negligible. A simple rate equation model of the charge‐state distributions shows clear evidence that heavy ions (Xe) reach higher charge states than expected, while light residual gas ions (C,N,O) reach lower charge states. This is taken as evidence that ion‐ion collisional cooling and heating of these ions results in enhanced trapping of the heavy ions, due to the presence of the residual gas.
