'Karaka' is endemic to the New Zealand region and is found in coastal and lowland forests of the north and south islands as well as the Chatham and Kermadec Islands. Archaeological and ethnohistorical evidence exists for widespread use of 'karaka' revealing that its cultivation increased its availability in geographic terms and its overall yield as a species, though it was possibly less widespread in the pre-human landscape.
