- Television introduced the conflicted nature of domestic space as at once private and public in the 1950s, as the television industry invested itself in (and profited from) the very anxieties that were directed towards the new technology. These anxieties were linked both to the role the new medium might play in shaping everyday domestic life and with external situations and reactions along broader cultural indices.
