- One day in the second week of February 1927, Bessie Smith walked into the kitchen of her Philadelphia row house with a pencil and paper in her hand. Her sister-in-law Maud Smith was there, at 1926 Christian Street, and likely her brother Clarence, who was the manager of her touring show,The Harlem Frolics, and also the straight man in one of the show’s comedy routines. All of them, along with twelve chorus girls, a seven-piece band, the comedy duo of Tolliver and Harris, and Eggie Pitts and his Dancing Sheiks had been on the road together since before Thanksgiving.¹
