  • Long term enrichment of CO[sub 2] in the atmosphere over a wetland increased CH[sub 4] emission. Emission was measured at the time of peak biomass and net ecosystem CO[sub 2] assimilation in a C[sub 3] sedge community where a sustained increase in carbon storage in response to experimental elevated CO[sub 2] has been observed over the past seven growing seasons. Methane emission from the sites exposed to present normal ambient CO[sub 2] averaged 1.37 mol m[sup [minus]2]min[sup [minus]1], while emission from CO[sub 2] enriched sites (normal ambient CO[sub 2] +340 ppm) averaged 2.46 mmol m[sup [minus]2]min[sup [minus]1] (1.97 and 3.54 mol m[sup 2]day[sup [minus]1], respectively). Although only a small percentage of the carbon flow through wetlands escapes as CH[sub 4], these preliminary emission measurements suggest that the response of wetlands to elevated CO[sub 2] may have important consequence for atmospheric methane.
