  • Even though electric lighting uses <5% of the energy consumed in the US, a lot of electricity is wasted on inefficient light bulbs, as well as badly designed lighting schemes. Trying to rectify the situation, the lighting industry has concentrated on making components efficient, with varying degrees of success. But using those components efficiently - creating just the right amount of light, with the right quality, in the right space - has received short shrift. Engineers and artists need to be brought together. Future designs should use halogen lamps, standard compact fluorescent lamps, four-pin compact fluorescent lamps, full-size U and double-D fluorescent lamps, or compact metal halide and white sodium lamps to combine efficiency with good color.
