Stable carbon isotope ratio chronologies were developed from 5-year tree-ring groups at 17 sites in the southwestern U.S.A.. These were examined for a relationship to drought conditions by fitting a spline curve to each chronology to eliminate the long-term trend and calculating the ratio of actual to spline curve value. There was a significant correlation with 5-year mean Palmer Hydrological Drought Indices and with reconstructed July Palmer Drought Severity Indices. Isotopic drought indices might furnish a useful measure of tree physiological response to drought in the form of stomatal closure. The cost of this type of analysis, however, was high.
