• 멕시코 소노라(Sonora) 주의 알라모스(Alamos)는 세계적 수준의 유산을 보유하고 있으며 세계유산 잠정목록에 등재되어 있다. 알라모스 중심가의 식민지 시대 건축물은 국가역사유물(National Historic Monument) 로 지정되었고 비할 데 없이 다양한 생물종이 모여 이룬 독특한생태계를 자랑하고 있으며 유네스코의 생물권 보전지역으로 보호되고있다. 지역 토착민들은 식물종의 일상적·의학적 용도에 관한 정보를잘 보호하고 있다. 외부 압력으로 인해 이 지역의 자연, 문화, 무형 유산이 위협을 받고 있다. 생물-문화 다양성을 규명하고 명확히 하기 위한 유네스코 지침은 신뢰할만한 복수의 제도와 학제간 전체론적 접근법을 요구한다. 본 논문은 프레스코화(fresco painting)라는 전 세계적 무형 전통을 통해 살펴본 생물다양성과 문화다양성 간의 관계를 탐구한다. 예술가적 관점을 통해 이전에 미처 발견하지 못했던 연관성을 비롯하여 파괴적인 토지 사용 행태에 대한 경제적 대안을 규명함으로써알라모스의 자연유산, 문화유산, 무형유산 보호를 위한 구체적인 권고사항을 제시하고자 한다. 프레스코는 무형의 전통이 스스로를 어떻게 표현하고 전 지구적 차원과 지역적 차원에서 생물-문화다양성에 어떠한 긍정적 영향을 미치는지 설명하기 위한 이상적인 사례이다. 이 사례는 자연과 문화의 상호의존성을 인식하고 기술하기 위한 틀과 방법론을 요구하는 유네스코의요구에 부합하며 다양성의 양적 가치에 대한 이해를 도모한다. Alamos, Sonora, Mexico contains world-class heritage and is on the tentative list for World Heritage status. The colonial architecture in the town centre has been declared a National Historic Monument and a unique eco-system of incomparable biodiversity and is protected under UNESCO’s network of biosphere reserves. Local indigenous groups keep alive a wealth of information about practical and medicinal uses of plant species. External forces threaten the natural, cultural and intangible heritage of the region. The UNESCO guidelines for identifying and clarifying bio- cultural diversity call for multiple regimes of credibility and an interdisciplinary, holistic approach. This paper explores links between biological and cultural diversity seen through the lens of the global intangible tradition called fresco painting. An artist’s perspective identifies previously unnoticed connections as well as economic alternatives to destructive land-use patterns, resulting in concrete proposals for the conservation of natural, cultural and intangible heritage in Alamos. Fresco is an ideal model for explaining how an intangible tradition expresses itself and positively impacts on bio- cultural diversity at global, regional and local levels. The model answers UNESCO’s call for frameworks and methodologies for recognising and describing the interdependence of nature and culture, and leads to an understanding of the quantitative value of diversity.
