Beschreibungen/Notizen
Surveys the contribution to Pacific Studies of the Roth family, especially Kingsley Roth, who served the colonial administration in Fiji, and his father Ling Roth. Probes the question why their achievements, particularly in research on material culture, are now not widely recognised. Argues that the Roths' reputation has suffered from an association with the racial typologies that characterised the field at the time they worked, anthropology's move away from a focus on material culture and Kingsley Roth's commitment to neo-traditional Fijian communalism. Contends that a reassessment of their work is warranted and suggests potential for fruitful alliances of research with indigenous identity and heritage interests.
