Many advances have been made in the diagnosis of microbial infections since the appearance of the 1974 (second) edition of this manual. The previous edition served as a bible for clinical microbiologists and as a reference work for clinicians interested in infectious diseases. This edition adds several useful sections related to recently characterized microbes, including legionella and campylobacter bacteria, opportunistic and saprophytic fungi, arenaviruses, and viruses causing gastroenteritis. Newer techniques are also described such as
Clostridium difficile
