  • We have reported that direct administration of interleukin-1β (IL-1β) into the rat anterior hypothalamus enhanced release of norepinephrine (NE) in the same region using microdialysis. There is a controversy on roles of prostaglandins (PGs) in IL-1β-induced monoamine release in the brain. We tested the hypothesis that PGs are involved in the NE-releasing effects of IL-1β. Intraperitoneal injection of indomethacin (5 mg/kg) significantly inhibited elevation of the hypothalamic 6-ketoprostaglandin Flα levels induced by IL-1β (1 ng/2 μl) which was directly administered into the bilateral anterior hypothalami. However, the drug could not inhibit the increase in the hypothalamic NE levels elicited by direct administration of IL-1β (1 ng/2 μl) into the anterior hypothalamus. These results suggest that IL-1 β is capable of increasing NE release in the hypothalamus irrespective of PGs.
