  • The Comprehensive Dentistry Department of Showa University Dental Hospital is a newly established (April, 2009) department, designed to treat patients who are referred to Showa without a specific department. A primary focus of this department is to provide care by working with other clinics in the regional alliance network. Starting in April, 2009, for six months we collected information on the patients treated in our department. Some of those results are presented here. 375 patients were treated during that time, consisting of 151 males and 224 females. Most of them were in their 30s (21.6%), followed by those in their 20s, and then those in their 60s. A total of 137 people (36.5%) were patients with some sort of systemic illness, primarily cardiovascular disease (79). Most of these patients (235) were sent to us from other clinics, while 31 were referred from other departments within the dental hospital. Of those patients referred from other clinics, most came from the Oota Dental Association (33.2%), followed by the Setagaya (20.4%) and Meguro (14.0%) Dental Associations. General dental problems (74.2%) was the most common reason for referral to our department, followed by those who had a systemic illness, patients with dental phobia, and finally, those with gag reflex problems. During treatment, 16 (4.3%) required monitoring of their cardiac functioning and 45 (12.0%) required intravenous sedation.
