  • Silica aerogels are silica‐based dried gels that have very low weight and excellent thermal insulation performance. Silica aerogels are an innovative alternative to traditional insulation due to their high thermal performance, although the cost of this material remains high for cost‐sensitive industries such as the building industry. The silica aerogel clearly provided composites with improved mechanical performance. This chapter focuses on the evaluation of the fire performance of a non‐load bearing external wall insulated by aerogel blankets. Aerogel blankets are an innovative alternative to traditional insulation materials in building and construction applications, but their cost is still high in the building industry. Development of a flexible fiber‐reinforced silica aerogel composite blanket is one promising approach, providing a conveniently fielded form factor that is relatively robust toward handling in industrial environments. These polymer‐reinforced aerogels are lightweight, porous, and have low thermal conductivity, which makes them an ideal material for numerous automotive applications.
