  • This paper uses the framework in Ashenfelter and Zimmerman (1997) to examine rates of return to schooling in Malaysia. There has been a concern among development economists that observed high rates of return to schooling in developing countries may be due to omitted family factors. The reason is that family networks and connections tend to play a more important role in many aspects of life in developing countries than developed countries. An investigation into the return to schooling, after taking into a ccount unobserved family specific factors, is not only useful for individuals` investment decision in education but also relevant for policymakers` discussion on public schooling. Similar to findings in Ashenfelter and Zimmerman, sibling data in Malaysia show that least-squares estimates of return to schooling do not suffer large biases from omitted family background. However, family fixed-effect plays a significant role in the rate of return to schooling among girls. Nevertheless, this larger impact is most likely a result of selection bias, since female labor market participation rate is low.
