In Islamic traditional literature there is a late, little developed, and almost disregarded genre called “asbāb wurūd al-ḥadīṯ” (or, for short, “asbāb al-ḥadīṯ”). Works categorized as “asbāb al-ḥadīṯ” contain traditions of prophetic sayings accompanied by accounts of the circumstances under which these words have allegedly been uttered.
The present article offers a survey of this genre and examines its relation to the so-called “asbāb an-nuzūl”. The “asbāb an-nuzūl” or “occasions of revelation” are generally viewed by Muslim scholars as a genre of the exegetical tradition reporting the circumstances under which certain Quranic verses are thought to have been revealed.
At first glance, the asbāb al-ḥadīṯ may seem to be a late response to the asbāb an-nuzūl-literature. However, upon further examination it becomes clear that it is rather the other way around: the asbāb an-nuzūl are modeled after the pattern of the asbāb al-ḥadīṯ.
