• We consider a false generalization of the rule of Sarrus, commonly attempted by students in linear algebra courses, and establish some of its properties using dihedral groups. We explore when this dihedrant equals the determinant and conclude with a Sarrus-like scheme for accurately calculating determinants of 4 × 4 matrices.
