One of the possible summary descriptions of a stationary, isotropic point process in R2is the distribution function of the distance from an arbitrary sample point in R2to the nearest point of the process. We consider the estimation of this distribution function from realisations of the process, with particular regard to the optimum relative intensity of sample points to process points. We also give a bibliographical summary of known results about the efficiency of various designs of locating the sample points.
