• On the one hand, scientific pluralism - the view that epistemic or social diversity contributes significantly to the achievement of the aims of science - is both promising and popular in contemporary philosophy of science. On the other hand, recent publications have indicated that not all types and levels of diversity are always good for science. The main aim of this paper is to analyze the general structure of the resulting challenges in terms of trade-offs. When considering how science should be organized, a variety of epistemic and non-epistemic goals and constraints need to be taken into account, not all of which require the same types and levels of diversity. What is needed is a refined or moderate pluralism, which acknowledges both the potential benefits of diversity for science and those goals and constraints that require comparably lower levels of diversity.
