  • One of the most important religious and political issues of the early centuries of Islam, was the question of the degree of fidelity of the official version of the Quran, called the Vulgate of 'Uthmān, with the revelations received by the Prophet Muhammad. According to sources, many personalities and several religious movements questioned the integrity of this Quran and supported other Quranic Codices. Among these, the Alids (later called Shi'ites) formulated during the pre-Būyid period, the strongest and most frequent criticism and accused the redactors of the 'uthmānic Vulgate by falsification. But after coming to power of the Būyids in 4e/xe century, Imami theologians who frequented the circles of power had come back on the theory of falsification to not hit front ally the Sunni caliphate and Sunni majority of the population that they should control. Torn between a tradition that heavily supported this theory and the realities of the exercise of power, the Imamis will have now often ambiguous and embarrassed attitude face to the known version of the Quran. Al-Shaykh al-Mufid, probably the most famous thinker of the Buyid period, is a perfect illustration of this ambiguity wrapped in a complex rhetoric and pragmatism.
