  • Hutchison draws from the well-established theory that emotions are embodied acts or practices akin to speech acts or other performatives, and are, therefore, important political phenomena. Through this lens he interrogates the impact of grief on the political landscape of France until 1413 and upon the various narratives that emerged explaining the outbreak of civil war. These dates are of particular interest because it was during this time that the civil war crystallized and when mourning discourse for Louis of Orleans was most pronounced. Mourning was one dominant rhetorical frame for defining friend from foe in the civil war and for defining the relationship that each group had with the king. Grief was, therefore, a critical part of the assemblage of events and experiences that led to the outbreak of the war that endured for the next 25 years.
