• L'apparition du palais impérial au Palatin n'est pas due à Auguste. Bien que son installation sur la colline crée une première rupture — topographique et idéologique — avec la situation de l'habitat républicain antérieur, voisin du Forum, la résidence du princeps est encore une domus aristocratique. La Domus Tiberiana, construite sans doute sous Néron, est en fait — sur le plan architectural — le premier palais impérial. Ce bâtiment fait alors partie d'un ensemble plus vaste, dont les différentes composantes — villa, domus, jardins — réunis dans le parc de la Domus Aurea, seront fondus par Domitien dans l'ensemble qu'il crée et oriente désormais en direction du Forum. La nouvelle Domus Augustana réunit alors toutes les conditions du développement postérieur d'un quartier impérial, qui s'identifie à la colline mais sur le détail duquel nous ne sommes que partiellement renseignés. The building of the imperial palace on the Palatine is not due to Augustus. Although its establishment on the hill created a first rupture — topographical and ideological — with the siting of the previous republican habitat, lying next to the Forum, the princeps residence still was an aristocratic domus. In point of fact, the Domus Tiberiana, presumably built under Nero, was — on an architectural plane — the first imperial palace. The building was then part of a larger whole whose various components — villa, domus, gardens — brought together within the park of the Domus Aurea, were to be fused by Domitian into the general pattern he created and thenceforward orientated towards the Forum. The new Domus Augustana then united all the conditions of the later development of an imperial district which became identified to the hill but on the detailed topography of which we are only partially informed.
