• The present study is a contribution to the ongoing debate concerning the nature of sexually transmitted disease in early pre-modern Europe. A central question has been whether the European Middle Ages knew syphilis or a disease similar to it prior to the first contacts with the New World, or whether its experience of venereal disease was limited to the gonorrhea and chlamydia known since antiquity, or, thirdly, whether some other reflex of treponematosis may have been present in early Europe. The document which the essay adduces for consideration has no scientific pretensions - not even those of its era - and must be approached with considerable circumspection and contexualization.
