  • The topic of the empirical study is the emotional aspect of change in the gender-roles; gender-related expectations about love and relationship are analyzed. Following a socialpsychological research tradition, scales for the measurement of love were adopted. The results are based on a representative random sample of the Austrian population (n = 1180). By factor analysis three dimensions of love were extracted: "independence (game-playing love)", "role orientation (friendship-love)" and "romantic love (eros)". There ist no difference between genders in the dimension of "role orientation"; the young and the more educated show more distance towards this traditional aspect. But a significant gender-difference was found in the dimension "independence (game-playing love)", which is prevalent among men. In the dimension "romantic love (eros)" no gender differences were found, this dimension seems to be of central importance for the relationship. The data give strong support to the thesis of the personalization of the conjugal relationship accompanied by the diminishing of traditional role elements. The conflict between genders has to be seen in the man's orientation towards "independence (game-playing love)". Women's employment neither leads to a change in the romantic love expectation of women, nor to an adoption of the male love orientation "independence (game-playing love)".
