• In the past decade, the amount of literature dealing with cross-border innovation in the multinational firm has substantially increased. This paper examines the importance of local and global influences throughout the innovation process, making a further distinction between the type of knowledge exchange that characterizes the various stages of innovation. The empirical investigation is based on three innovation projects carried out by small, innovative and highly internationalized firms.
