• The belief in Great Britain that there was an overwhelming military threat poised against the country caused a decisive hardening of nationalistic sentiment during the First World War. The debate about citizenship was partly used as a tool to exclude those perceived to be foreign or undesirable to the nation. The limited political success of the "jus sanguinis" showed that racist convictions could easily coexist within democratic forms of govemment.
