Based on an analysis of the quantity and quality of online publications of music history with respect to the Beethoven anniversary 2020 as collected in the German National Library’s web archive Sonderkollektion “250. Geburtstag Ludwig van Beethovens,” this article asks general questions about the present state of writings on music history on the internet-more precisely, the lack of such projects in comparison to book publications, developments in digital humanities, digital music journalism, as well as the ongoing digital transformation of cultural and cultural heritage institutions. Arguing for an expansion of digital musicology, the article focuses specifically on music history online and its prioritization in the strategic planning of the discipline’s future.
