The Compendio historial de los progressos de la ciudad de Placencia is an almost unknown work by Juan Ruiz de Laguna, printed in Spain in 1637. Its author was a very eminent official of the Catholic Monarchy, who had spent many years in Italy (but who had never been in the place he wrote about). Biographical notes about this letrado, a quick look to his other printed works, and a detailed list of the auctoritates quoted in the Compendio help to define the nature of Laguna's historical culture, as well as his concept of historical writing as based upon documentary (even if distorted) evidence. Here we can see the effects of his lifelong forensic experience, but also a little 'improvement' upon the historiographic methods of Italian Humanism and Spanish Reinassance, developing a more factual narrative style.
