• This paper proposes that in different types of societies, ranging from tribal to class and other complex societies, including late twentieth century Euroamerican culture, blood has served as a powerful idiom not only to establish social difference but also to legitimate it as well and to turn it into inequality. According to blood ideologies, social inequality is explained in terms of difference of blood, which is considered an unalterable natural condition. Notions of purity and pollution, mainly related to female bodies, serve as important agencies to keep groups separated by blood apart and to bind those together who share the same blood. The blood idiom is implemented differently according to the complexity of the society concerned. This paper outlines blood idioms in different societies and tries to show how they are constructed.
