• This article investigates the use of multiple narration inThe Ring and the Book, a text that reflects nineteenth-century debates about legal reform. The multiple narrators in Robert Browning's epic poem reveal the law's narrative procedures to be ineffective and incomplete—this truly is no way to tell a story. Influenced by Jeremy Bentham's theory of legal fictions, Browning produces a radical, even reactionary, attack on the legal system and questions the value of the adversarial system itself.
